Whatever you consume, consumes you

Your mind has a diet too. What are you feeding it?

We’re used to thinking of consumption as a physical act: food, drink, products, calories. But the truth is, we are constantly consuming ideas, emotions, conversations, scrolling through social media, true crime podcasts, that series you hate to watch but can’t stop watching. And whether we realise it or not, it all goes in.

Here’s the thing: whatever you consume, consumes you right back.
Not in a horror movie kind of way but in the slow, quiet, self-destructive way.

We like to think we’re immune. That we can listen to toxic messaging, spend hours comparing ourselves online, drown ourselves in sad girl playlists, and still come out mentally fresh and spiritually vibrant. But the truth is, we aren’t.

Just like junk food, junk input affects your health. Only this time, it’s your mental and your emotional health,  and your self-worth.

The Hidden Diet You Didn’t Know You Were On

Your real diet isn’t just what you eat. It is:

  • What you watch when you’re bored or anxious

  • What you listen to when you’re walking or working

  • The conversations you have

  • The thoughts you rehearse daily

  • The accounts you follow

  • The stories you tell yourself about what’s possible for you

So if you’re feeling drained, stuck, disconnected maybe it’s not just your schedule or your mindset. Maybe it’s your intake. Are you accidentally binging fear, lack, outrage, comparison, and criticism?

They say you are what you eat. But this is also true for everything else you consume. Not all at once. But drip by drip. And if you don’t choose what fills your inner world, something or someone else will, but not in a positiv way.

So What Is Consuming You Right Now?

Let’s get honest and start reflecting on your consumption. Ask yourself these 4 questions:

  • When I spend time online, how do I feel afterward? Energised? Empty? Numb?

  • Who or what am I giving the most airtime to in my mind?

  • Which voices am I amplifying? Do they align with my values?

  • If my inner world was my living room, would I actually want to live in there?

Notice. Don’t judge. Awareness is step one. You can’t reset what you don’t realise.

You Don’t Have to Go Full Hermit

This isn’t about deleting every app, cancelling all your subscriptions, ghosting your friends. This is about curation: conscious consumption and emotional hygiene.

Try this:

  • Mute, unfollow, unsubscribe from content that triggers self-doubt or comparison

  • Swap one doom-scroll session for five minutes of intentional silence

  • Curate your playlists, podcasts, and inputs like your life depends on it (because energetically, it kind of does)

  • Protect your mornings and evenings like a sacred garden. Start and end your day on your terms and cut the world out

  • Choose one new input that feeds your spirituality, intellect, or creativity

Be the Gatekeeper

You’re not just a sponge passively absorbing whatever the algorithm throws your way.
You’re the gatekeeper of your own mind. The editor-in-chief of your thoughts.
And when you become intentional with what you let in, everything starts to change.

Your energy. Your confidence. Your ability to focus, to heal, and to create.

So ask yourself today:

  •  Is this nourishing me or numbing me?
  •  Is this supporting my growth or is it keeping me stuck?

Because whatever you consume… will eventually consume you.
So choose wisely.
